But you can be confident that if extraction is necessary, we will support you throughout the procedure, providing you with gentle treatment and calming reassurance.

Reasons for Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is usually a last-resort procedure, and we will only recommend it if it’s our only option for protecting the health of the rest of your smile. However, there are several situations in which we may need to perform an extraction:

  • Advanced Decay – If a tooth is too damaged by decay or has already had multiple fillings, a filling or crown may no longer be sufficient.
  • Root Canal Infection – Without prompt treatment, an infected root canal can advance to the stage where traditional treatment won’t save the tooth.
  • Preparation for Dentures – You are getting dentures and need to have one or more teeth removed for the best outcome.
  • Wisdom Teeth – As we have evolved, wisdom teeth no longer serve a purpose. Since they are far back in your mouth, they’re difficult to clean, which can lead to ineffective oral hygiene. Additionally, wisdom teeth can come in incorrectly and lead to a number of problems that affect your existing, healthy teeth. In these cases, we recommend extraction.

If you need extraction, you can count on our friendly, compassionate team to make the process as comfortable and stress-free as possible. We have decades of combined experience and know what it takes to help you remain calm and relaxed at all times.

Our caring team knows that the thought of having a tooth removed can be overwhelming, and we understand the anxiety it creates. We want you to be comfortable, so we are pleased to offer safe, effective nitrous oxide sedation.

Nitrous oxide is an odorless gas that we administer through a small nasal mask. Sit back, breathe normally, and in a few moments, you will feel the calming effects as the activity around you recedes into the background. Our busy patients will be happy to know that the effects of nitrous disappear as soon as we stop administering the gas so you can go on with your usual daily routine.

If you need a little extra help to relax, Dr. Knutsen will talk to you about prescribing a calming sedative to take before you arrive at our office. You will feel drowsy and very relaxed, allowing you to remain comfortable during your procedure. Please note that the effects of the sedative take a while to wear off, so you will need a friend to get you to and from your appointment.
